River Otter Sketch, Clarksburg State Park 2007

Gregory Scheckler relies on Renaissance oil painting invigorated with contemporary imagery and ideas. Often the imagery focuses on nature, wildlife, biology and astronomy. Scheckler is one of the very few artists today whose teachers’ lineage stretches back to the luminous Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519), as well as to wilder abstractionists such as Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944). As a living bridge among these traditions, Scheckler uses the the Renaissance humanist’s inventive mindset, linking visual art with nature and science. Scheckler also serves as Associate Professor of Visual Art at the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, as part of a dynamic, world-renowned arts community in North Adams, in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.
